Privacy Policy
This privacy policy applies to the SteadyMount macOS application, published by Forethought Studio. Last updated: March 2026.
1. Overview
SteadyMount is a local-first application. Your server credentials, SSH keys, and file contents stay on your Mac. We have no cloud service, no user accounts, and no way to access your data remotely.
2. Data stored on your Mac
SteadyMount stores the following data locally on your device. None of this is transmitted to Forethought Studio unless you explicitly choose to send it (see Sections 3 and 4).
- Server credentials — passwords and SSH key passphrases are stored in the macOS Keychain, encrypted by the operating system.
- SSH private keys — copies of selected key files are stored in the app's sandboxed container with owner-read-only permissions.
- Connection configuration — hostnames, ports, usernames, protocol type, and display names are stored in the app group container.
- SSH host key fingerprints — SHA-256 fingerprints of server host keys, used for Trust On First Use (TOFU) verification.
- Diagnostic logs — timestamped debug entries stored locally, automatically capped at 100 KB per log file.
- Preferences — your settings (display mode, crash reporting opt-in status) are stored in UserDefaults.
3. Crash reporting (opt-in)
SteadyMount includes optional crash reporting powered by Sentry. This feature is disabled by default and only activates if you explicitly enable it during first launch or in Settings.
When enabled, crash reports include:
- Stack traces and error information
- Basic device metadata (macOS version, app version)
Crash reports do not include your name, email address, server credentials, SSH keys, hostnames, file contents, or any other personally identifiable information. User identifiers are explicitly stripped before transmission.
Crash data is sent to Sentry's EU-hosted infrastructure (Frankfurt, Germany). You can disable crash reporting at any time in Settings.
4. Feedback (user-initiated)
SteadyMount includes a feedback form you can use to contact us. Submitting feedback is entirely voluntary. When you send feedback, the following is transmitted:
- Your message (required)
- Your email address (optional — only if you provide it so we can reply)
- App and system metadata — app version, macOS version, number of connections, and protocol types in use
- Diagnostic logs (optional — only if you check "Include debug logs"; these may contain server hostnames)
Feedback is sent to a Forethought Studio server. We use the information solely to respond to your message and improve the app.
5. What we do not collect
- No analytics or usage tracking
- No advertising identifiers or cross-app tracking
- No device identifiers (UDID, serial number, etc.)
- No file contents from your mounted servers
- No IP addresses of your configured servers (unless included in voluntarily submitted logs)
- No location data
- No contacts, calendars, or other personal data
6. Network connections
SteadyMount makes network connections only to:
- Your configured servers — direct SFTP or WebDAV connections that you set up
- Sentry (ingest.de.sentry.io) — only if you opted in to crash reporting
- Forethought Studio feedback server — only when you submit feedback
There are no background pings, telemetry beacons, or update checks.
7. Third-party services
- Sentry (Functional Software, Inc.) — crash reporting, opt-in only. Sentry Privacy Policy
8. Children's privacy
SteadyMount is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Your rights
Because SteadyMount stores data locally and does not maintain user accounts, most of your data is already under your direct control. You can delete all app data by removing the application.
If you have submitted feedback or crash reports and wish to request deletion, contact us at [email protected].
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be available at this URL.
