What is GIF?

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) is best known for short animations, but it is also used for simple graphics, logos, and icons. It supports only 256 colors per frame and uses lossless compression within that palette. For photos or anything with gradients, GIF is a poor choice because the 256-color limit forces visible banding. Converting to JPG or PNG gives you full color depth.
