DropFormat strips all metadata during conversion. Your output file contains only pixel data.

Why this happens on Windows 11

HEIC is a container format that usually stores iPhone and Android photos with HEVC compression. Windows 11 can display HEIC only when the required Microsoft Store extensions and codec support are present. That depends on the device, Windows image, app version, and installed extensions.

JPG avoids that dependency. It is the format Windows apps, upload portals, printers, and email clients expect when they ask for a photo.

Why not install the codec?

The codec can be fine if you only need to view HEIC files on one Windows 11 machine. It does not help when you need to send the image to someone else, upload it to a site that rejects HEIC, or open it in software that still expects JPG.

Converting once gives you a portable copy without changing the original. Keep the HEIC if you want the smaller archive version, and use the JPG when compatibility matters.

Privacy note

HEIC photos often include location, camera, and timestamp metadata. This page converts locally with WebAssembly. The file bytes do not go to a server, which matters when the photo is personal or tied to a place.

Need the broader Windows version? Use the Open HEIC on Windows page. Need a lossless output for editing? Use HEIC to PNG.

Windows 11 still does not guarantee HEIC support.
