What is AVIF?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses images at roughly 50% smaller than JPEG and 20% smaller than WebP at equivalent visual quality. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari 16+ support it, but desktop apps and older tooling lag behind.
